Holding back our opinion.

Accommodating.

Saying yes when we mean no.

Fitting in.

Dropping our dreams.

Pretending to be someone we’re not.

Laughing too loud.

Pretending to be interested.

Not asking for help.

Hiding.

Not speaking up.

Forcing ourselves to like the same music they do.

Chasing that unfulfilling career.

Buying the big house that doesn’t feel like home.

Having the same hobbies they do.

Dismissing what really makes our heart sing and soul soar.

Those are the things we do for love.

Isn’t that ironic?

Those are the things we do for love.

So we won’t hurt, disappoint, anger them.

So they’ll like us, love us, respect us.

But those things we do for love can’t buy us love.

No matter how hard we try.

No matter how hard we work for it.

No amount of love can fill the gap we are creating ourselves

by believing we should be any different than we are,

by believing we need to fix ourselves first.

And we only end up hurt, disappointed and angry ourselves.

Because we go out of our way to make them like us.

And we forget to love ourselves.

Isn’t that ironic?
